How to Withdraw PF & EPF Online: Process, Eligibility and Documents Required

10 Sep, 2026 11 min. read

PF withdrawal generally refers to accessing money from an Employees’ Provident Fund (EPF) account, either through an eligible partial withdrawal or final settlement. Eligible members can submit claims online through EPFO services, the UMANG app, or applicable offline routes. Before withdrawing, check eligibility, UAN and KYC details, bank information, required documents, current withdrawal rules, and potential tax implications. When changing jobs, transferring EPF instead may help preserve retirement savings.

Body

Your Provident Fund may quietly grow over years of employment. But when you need to access that money, the process can bring up several questions: How do I withdraw PF online? Is PF different from EPF? How much can I withdraw? And what documents will I need?

For most salaried employees, PF withdrawal usually refers to withdrawing money from their Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) account. Eligible members can submit withdrawal claims online through EPFO services or use the applicable offline process.

Before withdrawing, however, understand what type of withdrawal you are eligible for and whether taking money out now makes sense for your longer-term retirement plans.

What Is PF Withdrawal?

The Employees' Provident Fund (EPF) is designed to help eligible employees build savings over their working years. Contributions made to the account accumulate along with applicable interest.

A PF withdrawal means accessing eligible money accumulated in your EPF account, subject to EPFO rules.

Broadly, this could be:

  • Partial withdrawal or advance: You withdraw an eligible amount for permitted needs without closing the EPF account.

  • Final settlement: You withdraw the eligible EPF balance after meeting the conditions for final withdrawal.

The Employees' Pension Scheme (EPS) is related to EPF but follows separate rules. Your eligibility to withdraw EPF and your pension-related benefits should therefore not be treated as exactly the same thing.

Are PF and EPF the Same?

You will often hear people say "PF" and "EPF" interchangeably, particularly in the workplace. There is, however, a small difference in meaning.

PF, or Provident Fund, is a broader term for provident fund-based savings. EPF, or Employees' Provident Fund, specifically refers to the scheme for eligible employees, administered by the Employees' Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO).

So, when a salaried employee says, "I want to withdraw my PF," they are usually talking about money in their EPF account.

Is the PF and EPF Withdrawal Process Different?

If by "PF" you mean your EPF account, there isn't a separate PF withdrawal process. You are making a claim against your EPF balance through the applicable EPFO process.

What can differ is the type of claim.

For example, you could be making:

  • A partial EPF withdrawal or advance

  • A final EPF settlement

  • An EPS-related withdrawal benefit, where eligible

Each is governed by its applicable eligibility and claim conditions. EPFO currently uses Composite Claim Forms for eligible PF final settlements, withdrawal benefits and advances, while other pension-related situations may require different forms. (EPF India)

For simplicity, this blog uses "PF withdrawal" when referring to the commonly searched term and "EPF" when referring specifically to the scheme, account, or EPFO rules.

When Can You Withdraw Your PF?

PF is primarily intended for long-term retirement savings, but EPFO rules allow eligible members to access funds under certain circumstances.

Under reforms approved by the Central Board of Trustees (CBT), EPF in October 2025, partial-withdrawal provisions were simplified into three broad categories:

  • Essential Needs, including illness, education and marriage

  • Housing Needs

  • Special Circumstances

The minimum service requirement for partial withdrawals was standardised at 12 months. The revised framework also provides for retaining 25% of contributions as a minimum balance to help preserve retirement savings. (EPF India)

For unemployment, EPFO's October 2025 communication states that up to 75% of the PF balance can be withdrawn immediately, with the remaining 25% available after the applicable period under the revised framework. (EPF India)

Because withdrawal rules and their implementation can change, always check the latest conditions on the official EPFO portal before submitting your claim.

What If You Are Simply Changing Jobs?

Leaving one employer doesn't automatically mean you should withdraw your PF.

If you're moving to another EPF-covered job, consider transferring your accumulated balance instead. This can help preserve your retirement corpus rather than interrupting it every time you change employers.

What Do You Need Before Withdrawing PF Online?

Before learning how to withdraw PF amount online, make sure your account details are ready.

For online EPFO services, you may need:

  • An activated UAN

  • Aadhaar linked to your UAN

  • Aadhaar-linked mobile number for authentication

  • Updated bank account details

  • PAN, where applicable

  • Correct personal and employment information

  • Updated date of exit, where required

EPFO's guidance states that Aadhaar and bank details need to be updated for applicable online claims, and that PAN is relevant to the applicable tax requirements. (EPF India)

Check your details before starting. A mismatch in your name, bank information or other records can create unnecessary delays.

How to Withdraw PF Online Through the EPFO Member Portal

If your details are in order and you are eligible to make the claim, the online process is relatively straightforward.

Step 1: Log In to the EPFO Member Portal

Visit the EPFO Unified Member Portal and sign in using your UAN and password.

Check that your personal and employment information is correctly reflected in your account before proceeding.

Step 2: Check Your KYC Details

Review your Aadhaar, bank details and PAN, where applicable.

Pay particular attention to the bank information because the approved claim amount will be credited to the eligible bank account linked to your claim.

Step 3: Go to Online Services

Open Online Services and select the relevant claim option.

EPFO provides online claim facilities for eligible PF final withdrawals, pension withdrawal benefits and non-refundable PF advances, subject to applicable requirements. (EPF India)

Step 4: Verify Your Bank Details

Enter or verify the requested bank information.

Don't rush through this step. Check the account details carefully before moving ahead.

Step 5: Choose the Appropriate Claim

Select the claim that matches what you actually need.

For example, if you're still employed but qualify for an advance for a permitted purpose, you may need a partial withdrawal rather than a final settlement.

Step 6: Enter the Required Details

Provide the information requested for your claim.

The exact information required can depend on the type of withdrawal and the current EPFO process.

Step 7: Authenticate and Submit

Complete Aadhaar-based authentication or OTP verification where applicable and submit the claim.

Keep the acknowledgement or claim reference safely so that you can track its status later.

How to Withdraw PF Through the UMANG App

Eligible EPFO services are also available through the UMANG app, giving members another way to initiate and track certain claims.

The broad process is:

  1. Open UMANG and access EPFO services.

  2. Select the relevant employee service.

  3. Authenticate yourself using the requested details.

  4. Select the applicable claim option.

  5. Review and enter the required information.

  6. Complete OTP authentication where required.

  7. Submit your claim.

Because the app interface may be updated over time, follow the instructions displayed in the latest version rather than relying on screenshots from an older guide.

Can You Withdraw PF Offline?

Yes. If you cannot or do not want to use the online process, eligible PF claims can also be submitted offline.

EPFO provides a Composite Claim Form (Aadhaar) and Composite Claim Form (Non-Aadhaar) for applicable PF settlement, withdrawal benefit and advance claims. (EPF India)

The exact submission and verification requirements depend on which form and claim route apply to you.

Use the latest forms and instructions available from EPFO rather than downloading an old form from a third-party website.

How Long Does PF Withdrawal Take?

This is one of the most useful questions to answer before making a claim.

According to EPFO's FAQ, a claim must be settled within 20 days under the EPF Scheme. (EPF India)

That doesn't necessarily mean every member will receive funds on the same timeline. Processing can depend on successful verification and whether there are discrepancies or issues with the claim.

You can track your claim status through EPFO's services. If your claim remains unsettled beyond the prescribed period, EPFO says you can approach the relevant Regional PF Commissioner or raise a grievance through EPFiGMS. (EPF India)

Why Can a PF Withdrawal Claim Be Rejected or Delayed?

A small mismatch can sometimes hold up an otherwise straightforward claim.

Issues can include:

  • Incorrect bank details

  • Name or personal-detail mismatches

  • Incomplete or incorrect KYC information

  • Incorrect employment or date-of-exit information

  • Selecting a claim for which you are not eligible

  • Differences between information submitted and EPFO records

If a claim is rejected, don't immediately submit the same information again. Check the reason provided, correct the underlying issue and then follow the applicable process.

Is PF Withdrawal Taxable?

Not every PF withdrawal receives the same tax treatment.

Whether tax or TDS applies can depend on factors such as your continuous period of service, the nature and timing of the withdrawal, the amount involved and the income-tax provisions applicable at that time.

This is another reason why transferring PF when changing jobs can be worth considering: preserving continuity of service may also be relevant for the tax treatment of future withdrawals.

Since tax thresholds, forms and rules can change, check the current EPFO and Income Tax Department guidance for the year in which you plan to withdraw rather than relying on an old tax rate found online.

Before You Withdraw PF, Think About What You're Giving Up

Knowing how to withdraw PF money is useful. But being eligible to withdraw doesn't necessarily mean withdrawing is the best financial decision.

Consider Neha, 34, who has built up a sizeable EPF balance and is leaving her current employer. If she needs the money for an eligible and important financial need, accessing part of her EPF may help. But suppose she's simply moving to another job. Withdrawing the money because it has suddenly become accessible could reduce the savings she carries into retirement.

There is also an opportunity cost: money withdrawn today no longer remains in the account to potentially earn applicable interest and compound over the years ahead.

Your EPF savings can form an important part of your broader retirement planning. Try to view them as long-term savings rather than another bank balance available for routine spending.

Withdraw Your PF With the Bigger Picture in Mind

Once your UAN, Aadhaar, KYC, and bank information are in order, withdrawing PF online becomes much simpler.

Remember that for most salaried employees, the "PF" they talk about withdrawing is their EPF balance, so there isn't a separate PF and EPF withdrawal route. What matters is whether you are eligible for a partial withdrawal, final settlement or another type of claim.

And before withdrawing, think beyond the immediate amount available. If you're simply moving from one job to another, transferring your EPF may help keep your retirement savings intact. If you genuinely need to access the money, check the latest EPFO rules, choose the appropriate claim and review your details carefully before submitting it.

FAQs About PF and EPF Withdrawal

Are PF and EPF the same?

PF is a broad term for provident fund savings, while EPF specifically refers to the Employees' Provident Fund administered by EPFO. In everyday usage, salaried employees commonly use "PF" to refer to their EPF account.

Is the PF and EPF withdrawal process the same?

If "PF" refers to your EPF account, yes—there isn't a separate withdrawal process. The process and eligibility instead depend on whether you are making a partial withdrawal, final settlement or another applicable claim.

Can I withdraw my PF without resigning?

Eligible members may be able to make partial withdrawals for permitted needs without leaving employment, subject to prevailing EPFO rules.

Can I withdraw only part of my PF balance?

Yes, partial withdrawals are permitted in eligible circumstances. The amount you can access depends on the applicable withdrawal category and current EPFO conditions. The revised framework approved in October 2025 provides for a 25% minimum balance from contributions to help preserve retirement savings. (EPF India)

Can I withdraw EPF and EPS together?

EPF and EPS follow different rules. Your eligibility for an EPF settlement and an EPS withdrawal benefit or pension depends on factors including your circumstances and eligible service period. Check the applicable EPFO requirements before submitting a claim.

Why was my PF withdrawal claim rejected?

Possible reasons include incorrect KYC or bank information, mismatched member details, employment-record issues or not meeting the eligibility conditions for the selected claim. Check the rejection reason before applying again.

How can I check my PF withdrawal status?

You can track an eligible claim you submitted through EPFO's online services. Keep your claim details or acknowledgement available when checking its progress.
